Description: Part of Parallel 49 Spring Seasonal lineup, this Imperial IPA combines a hefty combination of pale and rye malts, and is then bittered using a similarly robust amount of Chinook, Simcoe, Amarillo and Centennial hops.

Tasting Notes: As Imperial IPAs go, this beer was quite smooth and drinkable. Surprising considering its strength and the hefty dose of rye. And yet, the rye malts and heavy helping of Pacific Northwest hops balance out to create a pretty subtle but complex brew.

Appearance: Deep orange, mildly cloudy, good foam retention and carbonation
Nose: rich malt, rye notes, citrus, pineapple, and passion fruit hops
Taste: Smooth, slightly crisp malt, notes of herbs, citrus, peach, pineapple
Aftertaste: Lingering tang, citrus and tropical fruit and rye bitterness
Overall: 8.3/10

Fernie Brewing Last Cast Summer IPA

Description: The final beer on Fernie Brewing’s Bucket List IPA Series, the Last Call is a summer-seasonal IPA is lighter bodied than their previous offerings. Much like the others, it is bittered using a combination of new hops, including the Falconer’s Flight, Amarillo, Ahtanum and Galaxy varieties.

Tasting Notes: An unusual IPA, to be sure, the Last Call was reminiscent of both a Pilsner and an IPA. This comes through in the crisp malts (which I can only assume are Munich, Pilsner and/or Vienna), but is reinforced in the hop combination that brings out a certain herbal and slightly skunky flavor, in addition to a good citrus bite. A nice combination and a good way to finish off a lineup!

Appearance: Golden, cloudy, good foam retention and carbonation
Nose: Grainy malt, dry, herbal hops, mild skunk
Taste: Crisp, grainy malt, good tang, strong bite of bitter, herbal, citrus hops
Aftertaste: Lingering citrus bitterness and herbal notes
Overall: 8/10

Philips Octofox India Pale Ale

Description: As part of their Area 52 series, the Octofox IPA comes straight from the Philips Brewery’s “hoptomology lab”, where the brewers combine different strains of hops to achieve unique IPA flavors. The Octofox was one of their earliest specimens, and for the first time is available in a bomber as a Fall limited release!

Tasting Notes: This is my first exposure to an Area 52 release, and hence the work of the Philips “hoptomologists”. The beer is what one could expect from a solid West Coast IPA, consisting of some good strong malt. And the hop profile is definitely varied and complex, consisting of citrus, tropical fruit and pine-resin flavors that come from what I can only assume is a blend that includes Zythos, Columbus, Centennial, Cascade and Amarillo hops.

Appearance: Light amber, clear, good foam retention and carbonation
Nose: Rich malt, bright bouquet of floral hops, citrus, pine, tropical fruit
Taste: Strong malt, milt coarseness, strong notes of grapefruit, pineapple, and pine
Aftertaste: Lingering hop bitterness, citrus rind and pine and tropical fruit
Overall: 8.5/10

Goose Island Sofie Farmhouse Ale

Description: Crafted in the Belgian/French Farmhouse fashion, this beer is fashioned using 2 Row, Pilsen, and Wheat malts and is then bittered and flavored with Amarillo hops and hand-zested orange peel. The brew is then bottle-conditioned for up to five years to create a well-balanced, yeast, effervescent ale.

Tasting Notes: This is my second installment in the Goose Island Brewery tour, and after the first, I was expecting something less impressive. Surprisingly, this beer was equally amazing. A champagne-like effervescence accompanies the farmhouse-style flavor of sharp malt and spicy yeast, and fruity esters mix with citrus to create an all-around complex and refreshing profile that is slightly sweet, tangy, bubbly and refreshing.

Appearance: Light golden, slightly cloudy, good foam retention and carbonation
Nose: Mild malts, slightly sour, fruity esters, yeasty, hint of citrus and tropical fruit
Taste: Sharp malt, yeasty, good tang, fruity esters, pineapple, orange
Aftertaste: Lingering sourness, yeast, and tart fruity notes
Overall: 9.5/10

Spinnakers Jolly Hopper Imperial IPA

Description: Named after the flag pirate ships would fly to signal imminent attack, this Imperial IPA is brewed is using a variety of experimental hops, and in significant doses. The end result is a very strong, very hoppy India Pale Ale that combines English-style and West Coast-style brewing traditions.

Tasting Notes: This beer delivered in all the usual departments. It had the strong, coarse malts of an Imperial IPA, plus a very significant dose of hop bitterness. And you can sense the varied hop profile in both the smell and the taste. While it comes through with what appear to be West Coast Cascade, Centennial and Amarillo hops in the taste department, the nose calls to mind Kent, Golding and Fuggles – all English strains. A good IIPA, but definitely not for the faint of heart or unaccustomed.

Nose: Rich malt, fruity, English-style hops
Taste: Heavy malt, coarse and tangy, bitter burst of grapefruit
Aftertaste: Citrus rind, lingering malt coarseness

4 Mile Pale Ale

Description: A combination of brewing styles, this pale ale is brewed using English malts and West Coast hops (most likely of the Cascade/Centennial and Amarillo variety). Further indications of its English roots come in the form of extensive dry hopping, which results in a subtle ale with dry, but pronounced hop character.

Tasting Notes: I have to admit, this beer was a tad on the light for me. While I certainly appreciate subtle brews, the hop bitterness was a little too light for my taste, and the finish a little too clean and watery. What was missing was a malt backbone, then the dry hops may have come through better. However, I am prepared to admit that this may have been a false positive. I’ll need another bottle for confirmation, stay tuned!

Nose: Mild malt, citrus notes, grassy and piney hops
Taste: Mild malt, dry citrus bite, notes of grass, pine, and grapefruit
Aftertaste: Mild, dry lingering bitterness, very clean, watery finish

Central City/Elysian I-5 Amarillo Ale

Description: Brewed in tandem by Elysian and Central City, and as part of the cross-border effort Brewers Without Borders, this pale ale is crafted specifically for Joey Restaurants in Canada, WA and soon CA. Brewed using Munich malts and all Amarillo hops, it is available on tap at Joey locations and in 650ml bottles as a limited release.

Tasting Notes: As a single malt, single hop combination, there’s very little that is obscure or complex about the taste of this pale ale. However, it still manages to have a layered profile, with a good malt base that calls to mind baked bread and biscuits, and hops that provide a dry, citrusy and slightly peppery flavor that is not unlike an ESB. Definitely a good collaboration brew and an example of what brewers all over the Pacific Northwest can do.

Taste: Good malt, tang, baked bread, burst of dry hop flavor, herbs, citrus, pepper
